Dental emergencies are stressful; there’s no way around it. However, there are certain things that you can do to help you feel prepared and confident in case of a dental emergency. Today our West Bloomfield emergency dentists are reviewing some key things to keep in mind when you are faced with a dental trauma.

  1. Know who to call

Take the time now to figure out who you will call when you are faced with a dental emergency. Confirm that your dentist offers emergency treatment. If they don’t, ask if they have a recommendation regarding who you should call. Keep the contact information for your emergency dental team in an easy to access spot—like on your fridge, on in a note on your phone.

  1. Retain dental material

Let’s say, for an example, that you are faced with a dental emergency in which you lose a tooth. In this case, one of the best things that you can do is to keep your tooth, and the surrounding dental materials as intact as possible. You don’t want to clean any roots or tissues off of the tooth. In fact, if it’s possible, you want to gently reinsert your tooth into your gum tissue. This will allow the tooth to stay viable until you see your dentist. If it isn’t possible to reinsert your tooth, or if this is uncomfortable, then you can place your tooth in a glass of milk until you see your dentist.

  1. Be careful about numbing and pain management medications

You don’t want to put anything directly onto the damaged dental tissues or tooth, as this can lead to further problems. Instead, use an ice pack to numb the damaged area from the outside of your cheek.

With some smart planning now, you can improve your experience when faced with a dental trauma or emergency. As always, our West Bloomfield emergency dentists have more information for you—just give us a call to get started with a consultation!
